Mark Cuban (enterpeneur, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, blogger) recently suggested that musical artists serialize their releases on a constant basis instead of dropping LPs from the heavens every few years.
Worked for Dickens and still works for lots of indie -- and especially dance -- artists, right? Timbaland is about to be one of the first mainstream artists to put that idea to the test in what is being dubbed the first "mobile album."
The prolific producer/performer will be recording one song for each month of 2008 -- does that mean we get a Christmas song!? -- exclusively for Verizon V Cast customers, according to Billboard.biz. He'll be doing some or all of the recording on the Verizon Mobile Recording Studio.

this is genius. Imagine artists taking what amount to single deals with... well... everyone except record labels? Imagine exclusive M.O.P. tracks pumping throw the speakers of Bally's or Gold's Gym under a new distribution deal. Imagine some Jack Johnson only being heard at Banana Republic. Or certain restaurants playing exclusive tracks from certain artists. it's a real hustleknockin' sort of idea when you stop and think about it. For lots of artists--major artists even, the industry becomes almost irrelevant or at least less relevant. It'd be virtual tours, basically...
