I remember once having a discussion with this kid “Chris,” a fellow intern back in college. He swore he was a funk fan—even had some old George Clinton P-funk ticket stubs in his wallet, so we talked.
Subject turned to bass. To this day I’m convinced that the funkiest bassline ever belongs to one Tom Browne courtesy of Jamaica Funk.
Chris was positive that while he’d never heard of Tom Brown or “that jamaican funk song” as he called it, nothing known or unknown could top the funk Trent Reznor laid down on “Closer”.
Now I wasn’t familiar with NIN at the time, so I decided what the hell and gave it a listen. Not even close—Tom Browne by a SirNoze… Tho when it comes to creepy visceral imagery, videos, its hard to top Rez when he’s on his game.
But I’ve always kept my ears out for Reznor ever since.
He’s not my cup of tea to be honest… But a year or so ago, he hooked up with the equally out-there Saul Williams for The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!
After learning of the business model Trent and Saul were doing, I had to support Niggy.
And do some research on Trent.
Talk about a funky-ass white boy.
