It's been a few months since Howard Stern teed off on Gabourey Sidibe... Still amazed by the number of folks who don't realize that a--hole that Stern was, he was actually right. Rewind:
If Gabby were your niece or nephew or some chick in your
neighborhood, you’d say “damn that’s a big heffa! She need to get that under
control.”
Take it from a guy whose tipped scales at 325lbs myself: black folks gotta accept the fact
that this isn’t about being “big-boned” or “thick” or even a “BBW”… Gabby can
act her ass off, she’s got a great personality and seems like really good
people.
But if Gabourey Sidibe is under a size 24, then I got blonde
hair.
Two things you don’t see a lot of: Really Tall Old people,
and really old fat people. The human body can only take so much for so long.
It’s bad on the joints, it’s bad on the internal organs especially the heart.
Gabby is not gonna have a long life if she doesn’t get her weight under
control.
And I’m not saying Gabby hasn’t tried to lose weight or
isn’t aware that she’s overweight. But it’s condescending and mean to keep
acting like she’s got a healthy look going and that anyone who says otherwise
is just hating.
Again, Howard Stern is an a–hole. He’s a bigot. He seldom speaks
from a place of genuine concern or interest in anything other than his self.
He’s got a 30 year radio record to back this up.
But if folk can’t see that there’s a certain degree of truth
in what he says then we’re being just as mean to Gabby Sidibe as he was…
Look it, we’re not talking about Queen Latifah or Lela
Rochon or curvier women, which by Hollywood’s standard is any woman over a size 2. We’re not talking about a size 12 or 14. We’re not even talking about Mo’Nique
or Kathy Bates. We’re talking about a young talented sistah who at age 26, is
crazy obese.
As an actress, Gabourey's weight was fine for Precious, because that’s clearly what the role called for. But if Gabby is still lookin’ like this 5 years from now, she’s gonna choke the hell out of her life span. And when she keels over at age 40 from a heart attack or a preventable stroke or something, weight-related everyone whose been enabling her is gonna say “Damne shame how Gabby went out like that. Why didn’t somebody help her sooner?”
